Dr. R. Keith Osterheld, a happy and caring husband, father, grandfather and uncle, went to be with his Lord on Feb. 4, 2015, in Little Rock, Ark. He was 89. He was born to Albert and Hilda Osterheld on April 19, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Keith married the former Jean Evans, whom she met while Keith was a chemistry instructor at Cornell University and she was a chemistry graduate student, on June 28, 1952, in Johnstown, Pa. After spending their honeymoon in the Rocky Mountains and becoming captivated by the West, they moved to Montana in 1953 when Keith was hired to teach in the chemistry department at the University of Montana in Missoula. The couple proudly raised four sons, Bob, Al, Jim and Tom, in their cherished Bitterroot Valley where they had a cattle ranch for almost 50 years. Keith, who was passionate about teaching, held the chemistry department chair from 1973 until his retirement in 1990. He even received the Robert T. Pantzer Presidential Humanitarian Award for “making the university a more open and humane learning environment” in 1994. Ever civic-minded, Keith was a member of the Florence-Carlton School Board for six years and treasurer of the Florence-Carlton Community Church for 24 years. The couple were dedicated members of FCCC for more than half a century. During World War II, Keith humbly served his country as an air traffic controller in the U.S. Army Airways Communication Service in the Philippines. In 2014, the couple relocated to Arkansas to be near family. Keith is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean, son Bob and daughter-in-law Carol Osterheld, son Al Osterheld, son Jim and daughter-in-law Myrna Osterheld and son Tom and daughter-in-law Claudia Osterheld, as well as grandson and namesake Keith Osterheld and granddaughter Celeste Osterheld. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mildred Osterheld, and brother Gordon Osterheld. Services will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Florence-Carlton Community Church in Florence, Mont., on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015. Burial, at the Florence-Carlton Cemetery, will be followed by an ice cream social.
