STEVENSVILLE - Rose Gress Pfau, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Rose was born on March 21, 1917, in Bismarck, N.D., to Mary (Knoll) and Frank Gress. She had three sisters and three brothers. In 1928, her family moved from Bismarck to Yakima, Wash. The family then moved to Missoula in 1929.

She married George Pfau in Stevensville on Sept. 17, 1935. They purchased a farm south of Stevensville where they raised their family. She was a hard-working wife and mother helping Dad in the beet fields. She was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Stevensville for more than 60 years. She participated in a great number of church activities such as St. Mary's Alter Society and volunteering at St. Mary's Mission and Gift Shop. Mom would take all the church linens home to wash and iron after a majority of the functions held at St. Mary's Parish Center for many years. They also belonged to the Good Sam's Club. In 1976, after many years of hard work, they retired. They enjoyed square dancing, fishing, camping with family and friends and playing cards. Mom could still beat everyone at pinochle.

Rose is survived by her three sons, George of Spokane, Jack (Linda) and Jim (Pat) of Stevensville; two daughters, Geraldine of Lolo and Mary (Mike) Ralls of Stevensville; her brother, Tony Gress of Missoula; one sister-in-law, Marion Pfau of Spokane. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband George; parents, Mary and Frank; brothers, Tom and John; sisters, Barbara Pfau, Magdalene Mitchell and Effie Mastel.

The family would like to give thanks to all the doctors and nurses who cared for Rose the past eight months, the staff at the Bitterroot Valley Living Center and a special thanks to Jessica, a very kind and caring physical therapist who never gave up.

Rose was a very caring and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was the happiest when she was at family gatherings where she was beating everyone at pinochle. We will miss her deeply.

A vigil/Rosary service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 13, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stevensville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, March 14, also at the church. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Rose's name to St. Mary Mission, 315 Charlos Street, Stevensville, MT 59870 or Aspen Hospice, 107 Bell Crossing W., Stevensville, MT 59870.

All of Rose's family has been in our thoughts and prayers. Ron so enjoyed getting to know her many years ago when building her home. Her positive attitude and kindness made quite an impression. Kay has worked with several of her family members who also talk about what a loving, good example Rose was. We send caring thoughts. Sincerely, Ron and Kay Daley

The time we lived and worked on the Pfau farm in the 60s was some of my best memories. Every spring when the robins arrive, I think of Rose and the lesson she passed on to me about Gods song birds. My thoughts and prayers are with Jim and all of her family.
