FLORENCE - Gregory A. Zinke, a gentle giant, passed away at home on Thursday, April 14, 2011, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Greg was born Sept. 11, 1957, in Hamilton.

When Greg was 10-years-old the family moved from Missoula to St. Ignatius. He grew up on the family farm. Greg not only worked hard but seemed to enjoy all of the chores of growing up on a farm, as well as the numerous adventurers he had with family and friends.

Greg graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1976. In 1983, Greg met and married Sandy. Their children, Craig and Brenda grew up in a warm and loving home. Greg worked as a planer setter in Polson as well as Darby. Later, Greg and Sandy purchased and operated a video store in Darby, expanding his love of movies, especially the old Westerns. After a few years, Greg took a job as a detention officer with Ravalli County Sheriff's Department. In 1999, he accepted the same job with the Missoula County Sheriff's Department. He worked his way up through the ranks to sergeant. Greg loved his team and they all worked well together. Greg treated staff, visitors and inmates with respect and got it in return.

After Sandy passed away, Greg met and married Marie. Marie whisked Greg away on trips to Idaho, California and Oregon as well as a cruise to Alaska. He would say, "Marie and I fit, we complete each other."

Along with his new bride came a new daughter, Maeson. Craig, Brenda and Maeson were the light of his life. Greg loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, crabbing, boating and riding his wave runner. He was a devoted Denver Bronco's fan. He liked to work in the yard and garden as well as the shop, if it was broke, he could fix it!

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Helen Lippincott of St. Ignatius.

Greg is survived by his wife, Marie of Florence; son Craig of Springfield, Ore.; daughters, Brenda (Shawn) of Stevensville and Maeson of Florence; four wonderful grandchildren, Josh, Troy, Mikayla and Christopher. Greg is also survived by three brothers and two sisters,  Donald (Marie) of Missoula, Diana (Jeff) of  Stanwood,  Wash., Kathy (Jim) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Richard (Mary) of Simms and Gary (Judy) of Stevensville. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews as well as a world of friends.

Special thanks to Dr. Nichols and Dr. Scott who worked so very hard as well as the nurses at Community Medical Center for their devotion and care of Greg and to Missoula Hospice for helping him through his last days.

A celebration of Greg's life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at the Florence Carlton Community Church in Florence. Chaplain Chuck Lee officiating. A reception will follow at the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family has started a college fund for Maeson at Farmer's State Bank, or the donor may make a donation to the charity of their choice.

It's been a long time since I've seen Greg, but I can't believe he's gone. I'm so sorry to see him pass.

When I read the obituary, my thoughts took me back to the days when we use to go see aunt Helen and all the kids. Some of my best memories as a child were playing with my cousins up in the barn. We had so much fun!

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. May God bless.

Love, Dennie
