Doris Joan Youngberg

STEVENSVILLE - Doris Joan Youngberg passed away of natural causes at the Bitterroot Valley Living Center on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011. She was 85 years old.

She was born July 10, 1926 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Erwin Joseph Slay of Columbus, Ohio and his wife Margaret Ellen Terry of Atlanta, Ga. When she was in her second year, Erwin, her father, and she were hit by a motorist which killed her father and fractured her skull, but from which she recovered. Her mother, sister and she then moved to South Pasadena, Calif. from Los Angeles where the girls attended school. Doris' education was interrupted in high school by Polio. She was the 13th person to receive the "Sister Kenny" treatment for that disease. She survived!

Her husband, Charles Youngberg, worked in the aircraft industry during World War II and after the war in the engineering department at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. He worked on several space missions including those to Jupiter, the moon and beyond. His funeral in 1987 was attended by colleagues and astronauts.

Dori triumphed over many hard knocks in her life. She was a true Christian and loved by all who knew her. Despite the paralysis from Polio, which she endured all her life, she finished school and took various jobs. She worked as a doctor's assistant, a nutritionist and several other jobs in her busy life.

Dori had an incredible sweetness which endeared her to all who came to know her. Her only child, Eric, was born in 1951. His birth was considered something of a miracle due to Doris' earlier bout with Polio.

Dori was truly loved by all who came to know her. Her last words were "Thank you" and "I love you".

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Corky and Ralph of Stevensville; son, Eric of Las Vegas, Nev.; nieces, Dori Ann, Stacey Klare and Kimberly Payne; nephew, Scott Slight.

Dori moved from Las Vegas to her new home in the foothills of the Sapphire Mountains last April. How she loved Montana and the beautiful views from her windows. The birds, the squirrels and the deer became her new friends. God speed little Dori!
