STEVENSVILLE - Patricia Jo Pagnotta, 62, died peacefully at home with her family by her side in Stevensville on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011. Patty had been valiantly battling stomach cancer throughout 2011.

Patty started her fight for life at birth after arriving two months premature in Wolf Point on Dec. 17, 1949. The oldest of seven children of Joe and Patricia Hathaway, she was raised in Glendive. She graduated from Dawson County High School in 1968 and later graduated from Eastern Montana College with a degree in psychology.

Her first job after graduation was at the Montana Developmental Center in Boulder, where she met her husband and soul mate, Gary Pagnotta. She was married in 1974 and moved to Bozeman.

While in Bozeman, she worked at Family Outreach and started raising her two boys, Jason and Nick. She spent hundreds of hours attending and watching numerous sporting events. She was the voice of reason and compassion in a house dominated by sports and competition. Patty worked for STEP in Billings helping families of children with disabilities. While working and raising two kids, Patty achieved her master's degree in early childhood development.

After seeing both kids through high school and college, Patty and Gary fulfilled their wish of spending their remaining lives in western Montana and moved to Stevensville in 2004. Patty worked at the Hamilton Middle School as a counselor. She was always grateful for the wonderful and gracious co-workers whom she considered dear friends.

By example, Patty taught all of us toughness, courage and stoicism as a big sister, wife, friend and mother. While battling her second bout with cancer, Patty continued to work full time as well as volunteer as a tour guide at the St. Mary's Mission in Stevensville. She enjoyed traveling and cherished spending time with her three granddaughters.

Patty was preceded in death by her husband Gary in 2006 as well as her father Joe and brother Mark. She is survived by her sons, Jason (Monica) of Tucson, Ariz., and Nick (Melissa) of Missoula; mother Patricia of Glendive; brothers Pete (Marlo) Hathaway of Tucson and Paul (Colleen) Hathaway of Madison, Wis.; sisters Molly (Scott) Reed of Phoenix, Teresa Roe of Glendive and Ann (Ron) Frazer of Billings; granddaughters Liliana, Sofia and Mallory; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Stevensville.

Please send donations in lieu of flowers to Ravalli Services Corp., 219 Pennsylvania Ave., Hamilton, MT 59840.

Patty's family would like to express their gratitude to the Hamilton Middle School faculty and students for all their support during this difficult time

Dear Family of Patty's,
We are fairly new owners at Kootenai Creek Village who got to know Patty as Secretary of our HOA. The news of her illness was such a shock. She amazed us with her upbeat attitude, always smiling & enjoying herself whenever we saw her at neighborhood gatherings. Our prayers are with during this very sorrowful time. We only hope that all the warm, happy memories you have of Patty will eventually overshadow your grief and she will live on in your hearts.
Blessings to you all,

My sincere condolences to the family of Patty Pagnotta.
She was one of the warmest, optomistic people I ever met. She and I were having a conversation one day when she was working for STEP. I was telling her of my dreams for my disabled son's future. She said" You go for it...if anyone can do it , you can." I will never forget how good that made me feel and her words came back to me and encouraged me many times later as our family continued on with our son's future.
And we have accomplished many of the things I was dreaming about that day, and she is part of that success.
A very good peson...gone too soon. Rest in peace Patty.

Pagnotta Family: I am at a loss for words in the passing of Patty. In fact I have been thinking about her lately and then I see her obituary this morning. Gary and Patty were always great neighbors of mine and we spent lots of time watching our boys in sports and watching the Grizzlies. I just want all the family to know that my thoughts are with all of you at this time.

Jason, Nick, and family, Please accept our deepest sympathy at the loss of your Mom. Patty was a wonderful person and we feel fortunate to have know her. We enjoyed all the baseball years we spent with both Patty and Gary. They were fun to be around and very proud of both of their boys. It is hard to understand a loss like this - hope you know others are thinking of you, caring about you, and wishing you comfort and peace.

Patty was a member of our Ravalli County Prevention Coalition, working to save youth from using drugs and alcohol. She was a mentor, an inspiration to all the youth and adults she worked with and one of the most gracious people I know. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you mourn the loss of such a wonderful woman. I believe the tribute that the teachers and students made in their pink glove video reflected their strong feelings of love and caring they had for her as their counselor. She left a lasting mark on all whose lives she touched. Prayers to all of you.

So sorry to hear about your mothers illness and death.
I extend my condolences to you and your families.

I have many fond memories of Patty and Gary always in the bleachers or the sidelines supporting their boys and ready to assist or help the team, always with a smile. I remember best the balance and fairness with which they approached the game or life. Always open minded yet quick to defend an injustice. That is the quality memory they left with me and I consider it a real gift.

They raised quality considerate boys as well.

Although I did not know Patty well, she was a fellow educator in the Hamilton School District and an amazing teacher. She was an inspiration to all of us, leading with quiet confidence, determination, and strength.
May you, her family, find comfort in knowing that she was held in the highest esteem and was a tremendous role model to the students and staff alike.

Pagnotta family - Though my time at HMS was all together too brief, Patty was one of the people who certainly has left a lasting impression on me. When I arrived as a brand new teacher, Patty was so welcoming and warm! She was always checking up on me and asking how I was doing... it was nice to know someone was keeping an eye out for this newbie! Over those two years, because her house was right on my way to school, I was able to stop in for coffee a couple of times before school. I cherished those little chats and always left in such amazement at the person Patty was - kind, generous, tenacious and so, SO incredibly brave...Patty was such a patient woman, staff and students alike benefited from her gracious spirit. The lives of students, parents, staff and colleagues are forever changed because of Patty and the influence she had on them. She will be sorely missed by so, so many people. God bless your family and may He hold you in palm of His hand during this time.

Jason, Nick, and all family: Your Mom was such a blessing in my life and at our school. Our doors were only feet apart and we visited at least a half dozen times a day. I know my life will never be the same at school. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful video at the reception. It let me have one last trip with Patty and I will cherish it.
God's Blessings to all of you

Dear Family of Patty,

I work with Patty at Hamilton Middle School and want to express my deepest sympathy to you all. Patty was an amazing woman. She showed all of us what strength and determination really is. She was truly an inspiration to us all. We are going to miss her so much. Everyone, students, teachers and staff loved her very much. We all know she suffered in silence and never complained. I know you as her family have a long hard struggle in her passing. Find comfort that she is now with Gary and no longer suffering. She left a definite footprint by all of her wonderful work with kids all over and particularly at HMS. We will miss her and cherish the time we had with her.
