HAMILTONa- Alice E. Thoft passed away Saturday, March 24, 2012. She was 84 years old when the Good Shepherd took her home.

Alice was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Vananda to the German couple Edward and Caroline Martin. In sixth grade she and her family moved to the Bitterroot Valley, where she attended and graduated school in Florence. It was at a school dance where she met her future husband, Robert Thoft. The two were married April 29, 1950.

As a young woman Alice was a competitive bowler and loved music. You would often hear her playing the keyed accordion, guitar or singing her favorite hymn as she played the piano.

As a rancher's wife, she was a member of the Republican Women's Club and heavily involved in the Montana Cow Belles, a subsidiary of the Stockgrowers. Alice and Bob made their home on the family ranch for almost 60 years raising cattle and sheep and also harvesting hay and grains.

Alice was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was the rock of the family, always trying to keep peace and harmony in unsettled moments. She never worried about receiving love, but was always giving it with the fullest of her heart. Whether family, loved ones or hired hands, Alice was always there to meet everyone else's needs.

Her faith was her cornerstone. As a founding member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church, Alice lived as a saint and tended her flock with love and tenderness. From her beautiful flowers to her lush garden, Alice was a tender of life, and we should all hope to be blessed with her grace and humbleness.

She is survived by her three children, Vickie Stewart (Walt) and grandchildren Dru and Derk Stewart; Bob Thoft Jr. (Susie) and grandchildren Stacey Plimmer (Gregg) and great-granddaughter Sayre Marie, Brett Thoft (Nicole) and great-granddaughters Amy and Alissa, and Mathew Thoft; and Becky Thoft and grandchildren Aaron and Allison. Her living brother and sisters are Thelma Jungers (Dick), Vernie Porch (Wally) and Johnny Martin (Minnie) along with many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville, where the service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Stevensville with reception to follow at Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Pallbearers will be Matthew and Brett Thoft, Dru and Derk Stewart, Aaron Darrow and Mike Carnahan. Honorary pallbearer will be Joe Elhard.

Please offer all memorials to the Our Savior Lutheran Church, 184 Pine Hollow Road, Stevensville, MT 59870.

Dear Becky, So sorry to hear of the loss of your mother, and your dad too. I saw you and your mother in your car outside the restaurant in Hamilton 5 years ago and visited with you awhile. It's a blessing that your mother is at peace, and your dad too. They lived wonderful, full lives many, many years when both were healthy and busy. I will be attending our 55th Class Reunion in August at Creamery Picnic, and hope to get in touch with you. I think I have your business card somewhere, but you may have changed your information after all these years. Send me an email with your information to bettemckinney@msn.com and I'll give you a call when I'm there. Again, my condolences to your and your family in the loss of your wonderful parents.
