STEVENSVILLE - Floyd Leon Fred Potter, 87, of Stevensville, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Bitterroot Living Center from natural causes. He was born Sept. 25, 1924, to Floyd and Sarah Derby Anzenberger Potter in Carbondale, Colo. He joined the United States Marines in 1943 and served in World War II.

Floyd married Irma Gerlits on Sept. 5, 1947. He was a firefighter for the Los Angeles County Fire Department for 27 years, retiring in 1973 at which time he and Irma moved to Montana.

Floyd and Irma had no children of their own; they adopted a family and were part of a family. Floyd loved them and spent a great deal of time, visiting, playing games, traveling, hunting and just enjoying his family. He was always cheerful and loved all kids, especially when they would go fishing in his pond. He was an active member of St. Mary's men's group, an avid rock hound, hunter and fisherman as well as a bottle collector.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Irma. He is survived by his adopted family: Anna Reid; Tom Vandehey; three "adopted" grandchildren, Melissa Vandehey Palmer, Erin Vandehey Lambson and T.J. Vandehey; and five "adopted" great-grandchildren.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 16. Father Matthew Huber and Michael Smith will be co-celebrants. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Arrangements under the care of Whitesitt Funeral Home Stevensville.
