STEVENSVILLE - Mabel A. Lanier passed away Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Bitterroot Living Center in Stevensville. She was born in Mecaha, Mont., at the mouth of the Musselshell River, on Aug. 30, 1917. She was 94 years old.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael, and a husband, Raymond. Her surviving children are six daughters and one son, Douglas (Ev) Dirkson living in Corvallis; daughters, Bobby (Bill) Hillman, Rosalie (John) Valoff, Sheryl (John) Lanier-Anderson, LynnMarie Lanier, Shelia Lanier, Michelle (Jim) Lochridge - all living in California and Alaska; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nephews and nieces.

Mabel has five living siblings - a brother and four sisters - living in Montana, Washington state and New York.

She spent her youth in eastern Montana and her early adult life in the Belgrade-Bozeman area.

Because of her husband's work, Mable's life experiences included traveling with her family from Alaska to the East Coast and back to her beginnings in Montana.

Mable studied painting at a later age in Michigan and continued painting, spreading her joy through her beautiful paintings the rest of her life.

She had a great sense of humor and her memories of the past never failed her. The last year and a half she loved telling stories to friends and staff at the Bitterroot Living Center about her young life on the Musselshell/Missouri River.

She will be missed by all of us. Her passing was peaceful and gentle into God's loving arms.

Mable was a gracious lady with a beautiful spirit. I visited her and took communion to her for a little over a year at the Bitterroot Living Center. I will miss her.
I am sorry for your loss.
