STEVENSVILLE - Joseph G. Dilts, 77, a true son of Montana whose grandparents homesteaded south of Colstrip, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2012, at the Marcus Daly Hospice in Hamilton of natural causes.

Joe was born July 14, 1934, in Forsyth to Joe and Zeta Dilts.

After moving to Billings and graduating from Billings High School, Joe met and married Dora Newby. For almost 60 years, he and his wife, with children in tow, scouted the woods and ghost towns of Montana. After retiring from Montana Fish, Wildlife andaParks in Glasgow, he and his wife settled in Stevensville.

For several years, Joe was a member of the Virginia City Preservation Society, the Bannack Association and a very active member of the Stevensville Historical Museum.

He is survived by his wife Dora at the family home in Stevensville; a daughter, Susan Spitzer of Missoula; a son, Joseph Dilts of Champaign, Ill.; and two granddaughters, Jodi Cline of Missoula and Krystal Grace of Champaign. He was preceded in death by a son, Dan Dilts.

A gathering for family and friends will be held at a later date.

Dora and family,
Was so sorry to read of Joe's passing yesterday. He was such very, very nice man. Joe always had something funny and upbeat to say about whatever subject we were discussing. We will certainly miss having him for our
neighbor.

I'm glad that I had a chance to meet him. Even though our meeting was short, I did get to see his sense of humor and will remember how he made me laugh. My heart goes out to Jodi and her family.
