Butte, Montana, lost one of its biggest boosters June 5, 2012, with the passing of Frank J. Metully, Sr., in Missoula after a 10-year battle with multiple myeloma.

He was born in Butte to Frank and Adeline Metully on March 24, 1931, and recently celebrated his 81st birthday. He was drafted into the Army to serve during the Korean War 1951-1953. Frank met and married Marian Ward in 1954; this marriage lasted 22 years and produced seven children, four sons and three daughters. In 1976 he married Karen Brechbill Leese, instantly acquiring three more children a" two daughters and one son.

During his first 30 years in Butte he was involved in playing baseball, a lifelong passion, and played in Butte's semi-pro Copper League. During his career he had the opportunity to pitch in exhibition games with Satchel Paige and Don Newcombe.

Frank lived in San Jose, Calif., for 16 years where he worked for Metropolitan Life as an insurance agent and for Abbey Rents as a truck driver. He moved in 1975 to Stevensville where he continued working in the trucking industry. Of all of his professional achievements he was most proud of the family business, Minuteman, which involved all of his children.

Frank is best known for his love of family and for his giant sense of humor. To many he was also known as Jose Jimenez and SeAor. He was a kind and intelligent man, always concerned for the underdog. An accomplished accordion player, he played with the Five Valley Accordion Association. Frank loved all of kinds of music but Willie Nelson's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" is his and Karen's song.

Frank is survived by his wife, Karen, former wife Marian, and their combined 10 children: Frank Metully of Seattle, John (Carol) Metully of Stevensville, Sandy (Randy) Scurr of Gaston, Ore., Jerry Metully of Missoula, Diane (Mark) Metully of Stevensville, Dan (Marguerite) Metully of Stevenville, Colleen (Rocky) Rowley of Victor, Sandra (Ron) Huetter of Stevensville, Donna (Jay) Bays of Stevensville, Duane (Suzanne) Leese of Stevensville; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Kathryn (Tom) Miller, and her family, and cousin, Alice Raymond.

A celebration of his life will be held at Whitesitt Funeral Home, 314 Church St., Stevensville, on Monday, June 11, at 1 p.m., followed by a military graveside service at Sunnyside Cemetery in Stevensville. The family will host a reception at the First Baptist Church, 402 Church St., Stevensville, immediately following the graveside services.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Ned Vasquez, MD; Patrick Beatty, MD; the physician and nursing staff of St. Patrick Hospital, especially Teresa Rigby, RN, of the infusion center; the Montana Cancer Center; and Partners in Home Care Hospice for kind and loving care.
