Thomas Robert Wilson

STEVENSVILLE - Thomas Robert Wilson died Monday, July 23, 2012 at Community Hospital in Missoula, at the age of 84. He was born to Edith and Cecil Wilson on Oct. 14, 1927. Tom worked on the Wilson family farm until he joined the Navy at the age of 17. While stationed in Cleveland, Ohio, he met and married the love of his life, Lois Gockel on May 7, 1949. He made the Navy his career and he and Lois moved throughout the United States raising their four children, Tom, Dorothy, Paul and Kathy. After retiring from the Navy in 1967, the family then moved to Adelphi, Md., where he was employed as a computer specialist at Bethesda Navy Hospital. He retired from that position in 1984. While living in Maryland, Tom and Lois were instrumental in establishing an organization, CALMRA (Christian Assisted Living For Mentally Retarded Adults) that created independent living for disabled people. Tom was also involved with the Boy Scouts for over 30 years and received many commendations for his service. He was a very active member of his church. Tom was known for his ever present smile, joviality and optimism.

After their daughter Kathy died, in 2007, Tom and Lois moved to Stevensville, enjoying the wildlife and scenery that Montana offers, and enjoyed spending time with his son, Paul and wife Jeanne and grandsons Luke and Conner. While residing at the Living Center, he established the resident council and received a plaque just prior to his death acknowledging his contributions.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lois; son Tom (Tricia) of West Salem, Wis.; daughter Dorothy (Tim) of Fairfax, Va.; son Paul of Victor; and grandchildren, Jacob of La Crosse, Wis., Raena of West Salem, Wis., Gina of Sparta, Wis., Luke and Conner of Victor.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Cecil; a brother Bruce; a sister Sheila; a daughter Kathy; and a daughter-in-law Jeanne.

A memorial service will be at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Stevensville, Thursday, Aug. 2, at 6:30 p.m.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to: Calmra, Inc. 5020 Sunnyside Ave., Suite #206, Beltsville, MD 20705.
