STEVENSVILLE - Walter F. Lloyd, 85, of Stevensville, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2013, in Stevensville of congestive heart failure. Walter was born on Sept. 6, 1927, in Helena to George and Myrtle Lloyd.

He graduated from Helena High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marines from which he received an honorable discharge.

Walter was married to Betty Lou Bergum on July 31, 1948. Walt was employed with the telephone company for 30 years. He retired in 1983 as the telephone supply manager for western Montana.

He was a member of the telephone pioneers and loved to hunt and fish.

Walt was on the Stevensville City Council during the late 1960s and the early 1970s. Walt was a starting member of the 1945 Montana State championship basketball team and was due to be enshrined in the Helena Sports Hall of Fame this July with the rest of the team. In 1946, Walt won the Marines Golden Gloves Heavyweight title at Camp Pendleton in California.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle and George; and his brother, Johnny. Survivors include his wife, Betty of the family home in Stevensville; a daughter, Jane of Missoula; three sons, Rick of Turah, Tom of Hamilton and Patrick of California; and five grandchildren. He also leaves behind his little dog "Tootsy."

A celebration of Walt's life will held in Helena on July 19 for family and friends. The time and place will be announced. The family suggests memorial donations may be made in Walter's name to a charity of the donor's choice.

Walt was a Wonderful man and bigger than life. Earth has no sorrow that heaven can not heal. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. A fond farewell to a bitterroot icon.
