CORVALLIS - Leona Rae Phillips, 70, of Corvallis, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 with family by her side.

She was born Jan. 2, 1943 in San Diego, Calif. to Lester and Jean Curry. Her father, a Navy chief hospital corpsman, moved the family to Guam in 1953. She enjoyed a two-week voyage on a merchant marine vessel just to get to her new home. While there she did the things 10-year-olds do on Guam, searching the tidal pools for new discoveries and making sure to avoid coconut crabs. The life of a military brat eventually took her to the mid-west where she married Don Lawton and had three children. She later divorced Don and on June 12, 1975, married her life partner, Duane Phillips. Four years later she followed Duane to Stevensville to begin cattle ranching.

Once the children left the nest, she received an associate's degree in accounting and began working for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in Missoula. She took many trips, both for work and pleasure, including to Europe, the Dominican Republic, Hawaii and an Alaskan fishing cruise. She also enjoyed fishing in Rock Creek and Georgetown Lake, jigsaw puzzles and playing Rummycube with her mother, sister, brother and whomever she could get into a game.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Phillips and her father, Les Curry. Survivors include her mother, Jean and sister Beverly of Corvallis; her brother, Bob of Victor; her sister Karen of Oahu, Hawaii and children Jess Phillips of Las Vegas, Sharon Lewis of Corvallis, Mark Lawton of Layton, Utah, Brian Lawton of Curitiba, Brazil, and Debbie Lawton of Missoula. She is also survived by many nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 10 at Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Stevensville with a reception to follow at the LDS Church.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Humane Society of Western Montana or the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
