STEVENSVILLE – Roger B. Johnson ascended to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 1, 1936, in St. Paul, Minn., to Clarence and Myrtle Johnson and graduated from Johnson High in 1954. He was active in numerous sports; he was on the 1953 Minnesota State hockey team and won the 1954 St. Paul City Tennis Singles title. In 1959, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a forestry degree. Upon college graduation, he served in the active Army Reserve for six years. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 1959 to 1991. In 1959, he married Patty L. Rugg and together, were blessed with three wonderful children, Greg, Gary and Susan. He was an active part of their lives and never missed an event in which his kids were involved. He taught them how to work and play. He loved his kids and will be missed more than words can express. Roger enjoyed motorcycles, snowmobiling, running, sports and the great outdoors. His greatest passion was packing into the backcountry with his horses and mules. The China Wall (in the Bob Marshall Wilderness) was his favorite place. His truck and trailer will be missed at many trailheads. Roger worked with the Boy Scouts and Awana programs. He was active in church, teaching Sunday School, serving as a deacon and was a board member for two Christian schools. Roger led the singing at Community Baptist Church in Stevensville for many years. Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Pat, of 54 years; son Greg (Cathy), grandsons, Christopher and Brian of St. John, Ind.; son Gary (Sherry), grandkids Sydney and Dylan of Plant City, Fla.; daughter Susan (Tim), granddog Max of Stevensville; brothers, Richard (Suzanne) and Robert (Judy) of St. Paul, Minn., along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Roger’s greatest family joy was being baptized with his three kids. He was blessed with his close “Over the Hill” Christian friends and many others. He will be missed by all! Graveside services will be held Saturday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Stevensville and a Memorial celebrating Roger’s life at 1 p.m. at Community Baptist Church, 409 Buck St., Stevensville with a reception to follow.
