Paul Thornton Morrison, Jr Missoula - Paul Thornton Morrison, Jr., of Missoula (previously of Florence) passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014, at St Patrick Hospital in Missoula, his wife Robynn by his side. He was born January 24, 1934 to the late Paul Thornton and Elizabeth Bell (Baker) Morrison at home in Darby, PA in a blizzard before the doctor could arrive. Paul grew up in Darby, attended local schools, and was active at Darby Presbyterian Church. He attended Juniata College in Huntington PA for two years, studying psychology and music. In 1954 he joined the Navy as a Naval Air Cadet. With the end of the Korean War, the Navy needed fewer new pilots, so Paul finished out his enlistment as crew member of an anti-submarine unit. He once famously slept through a carrier landing. After his discharge Paul attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in educational psychology. During his long career Paul taught English and served as a guidance counselor and a school psychologist in public schools in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. He also spent a year in Greeley CO doing graduate work and a year in Billings teaching (and falling in love with the West). Paul married Linda Hoyt Williamson of Media PA in 1958, and together they had six children before divorcing in 1986. Paul married Joanne Gioffre of Wilmington DE in 1987, and together they had two children before divorcing in 1996. He married his third wife, Robynn Hood of New Castle, DE in 2003, and became step-dad to her five children. Paul and Robynn were living in Bear DE, when Paul's son Jim moved to Stevensville in 2006. After much visiting and exploring the Bitterroot Valley, they were finally able to move to Montana in 2012, living in Florence with Jim and his family. They moved to Missoula in August to be closer to St Patrick Hospital. Paul had a life long love of music, starting as a five year old child when he began piano lessons. Over the years he played the organ and trumpet as well, and sang in many glee clubs and choirs, and starred in a number of faculty musicals. For as long as he could Paul was active in church activities as well, serving for many years as an elder of First Presbyterian Church in Paoli PA. In addition to his parents, Paul was pre-deceased by his granddaughter, Ruby Orthman. He is survived by his first wife, Linda Morrison of Nottingham PA, and their children: Donna Hatton and fiance Tom Carter of Cheyenne WY, Deborah Odle and husband Jeff of Middletown DE, Laura Hill and husband Chris of Middletown DE, Jim Morrison and wife Nancy of Florence MT, Jennifer Campbell and husband Frank of Jacksonville FL, and Scott Morrison and wife Larissa of Australia. Paul is also survived by his second wife, Joanne Morrison of New Castle DE, and their children: Maggie Morrison of Rehoboth Beach DE and Danny Morrison of New Castle DE. Paul is also survived by nine grandchildren: Libby Orthman Cooper and husband Cory of Owensville OH, Chris Odle of Townsend DE, Matt Odle and wife Rachael of Townsend DE, Allison Odle of Middletown DE, Brittany and Lindsey Hill of Middletown DE, Emily and Sarah Morrison of Florence MT, and Zack Campbell of Jacksonville FL. Paul is also survived by great-grandsons Aiden Cooper of Owensville OH and Logan Cooper who is due in October. Paul is also survived by Robynn's children, Jen Johnson of Wilmington DE, Julie Cowart (and husband Miles and son Liam) of Newark DE, Jeremy Johnson of Newark DE, Jason Johnson and wife Julie of Maiden NC, and Jeff Johnson and wife Julie of Smyrna DE. He is also survived by a host of friends and extended family, especially his oldest friend, Bill Giles (and wife Sally) of Pinehurst NC. Memorial service will be Friday, October 3, 2014, at 7 pm at Whitesitt Funeral Home in Stevensville with Pastor Andrew Voelkel of Christ Church Missoula officiating. Private family internment of the ashes will be held at a later date. A reception will follow the service at the home of Jim and Nancy Morrison in Florence. The family suggests memorial donations to one of Paul's favorite charities, Habitat for Humanity International, Heifer Foundation, or Wounded Warrior Project, or to a charity of your choice.
