Florence - Fred L. Guenzler, Sr., 92, passed away at his daughter's home on, Wednesday, August 18, 2021. Fred was born August 8, 1929, to Ted and Geneva Jackson Guenzler in Ronan Montana. They lived on a farm for about 14 years then moved to East Missoula. His sister, Mary Helen, joined the family in 1931. They went to school at Round Butte and Ronan. When he was 18 years old he went to work for Anaconda Copper Mining Company as a log truck driver in the Blackfoot Area. He also worked for Rossignol Logging and Art Koch logging for short times. About 9 years later he started operating heavy equipment with ACM using Allis Chalmers HD21 and D8 Caterpillars to build many logging roads around Western Montana and Idaho for 21 years. He fought many forest fires on his Cat and in 1961 on the Gold Creek fire the fire “crowned” over the top of him, so he made a swath with his brand new Allis Chalmers HD21 and he and his “path spotter” lay in the dirt under it while the fire burned over top them. It destroyed the new dozer, but both men survived with only a few days in the hospital on oxygen . Then he bought his own equipment from Champion International and maintained roads for Plum Creek logging and Forest Service with his road grader until his retirement at the age of 80. During his 62 year logging career Fred was the recipient of numerous saftey awards. He married Marcella Mills in 1948 and they had 2 children, Helen Guenzler Steele and Fred C. Guenzler. They lived in Seeley Lake until 1959 when they divorced and moved to Lolo. In 1969, he met and married Lois Nuckolls and her 6 children, David, Linda (Pasley), Frank, Gary, John, Cheryl (Dan Giese). They moved down the Bitterroot Valley to Florence where they raised cows, pigs, and chickens on a small farm until Lois passed away in 2004. Then he met another wonderful woman, Evelyn Warthen, and they were together until her passing in 2018. They had known each other in Ronan as children. Fred passed away August 18, 2021 just after his 92nd birthday celebration. He is survived by his children Fred and Helen. Grandchildren David (Robin) Johnson, Hebron ND, Karen (Dean) Clause, Pinedale WY, Ben (Katie) Guenzler, Stevensville MT, Cas (Kate) Guenzler, Billings MT, 11 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren, 5 stepchildren and many step grandchildren. Also his sister Mary in Bremerton WA. The service for Dad is Sept 25th at the Florence Carlton Community Church Florence at 11 A.M.

I am saddened to hear that Fred has passed. I just loved working with him over the many years helping him with his auto insurance. He was always so upbeat and so interesting! I am honored to have known Fred and wanted to express my sympathy to his family. He was one of my very favorites! May good memories be with you all and keep you smiling as you remember Fred through the coming years.
