FLORENCEa- Francis E. Mickens, 85, of Florence, passed away Monday, June 27, 2011, at Community Medical Center in Missoula of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 24, 1925, in Darby to Ryus and Pearl Mickens in a small cabin, now part of the Darby Historical Museum. At an early age, he moved with his family to Corvallis where he received his education and enjoyed sports. Summers were spent herding sheep in the West Fork and later working on local farms. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to the Bitterroot.

On May 8, 1949, Francis married Verlis Glaze in Hamilton. Francis worked for Rocky Mountain Labs and Safeway before enjoying a long career with Mountain Bell, first traveling throughout the state and finally locating in the Missoula area in '55.

His love of the outdoors began at an early age. Throughout his life, he enjoyed fishing and hunting to the extent that his kids could say: "If you've ever hunted the draws and ridges or fished the rivers, creeks or ditches between Florence and the West Fork, you've walked in my Dad's footsteps."

Francis was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jesse; sister Lucille; three half brothers, Cecil, Herchel and Delbert "Dee" Thompson; and daughter Sharon McPhee.

His survivors include his wife of 62 years, Verlis of Florence; daughter Diane (Dave) Holmes of Florence; sons Terry of Kalispell, Jerry of Raleigh, N.C., and Delbert (Tina) of Castle Rock, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 1, at Florence Carlton Cemetery. A reception will follow at the church.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Florence Firefighters Association or a charity of your choice.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Francis' caregivers over the past four months, and special neighbors Kenny and Stacie McCarthy.

Whitesitt Funeral Home provided the cremation services.

Verlis & family, Just wanted you to know we are thinking of you especially at this time. We enjoyed lots of fun times through the years with Mickens and dad working for the Mountain Bell. Dad often talks about you guys and how you helped to make it easier on mom through those first yrs traveling. He has wished that he could make one last trip to Montana to see all his friends and has especially talked about wanting to see you two again. Know we are thinking of you and lots of love goes out to you at this time. Take care Daryl Stahl, Sandy Stahl Kicker.
