MISSOULAa- Louise A. "Biegie" Miles Hand passed away July 8, 2011, in Missoula.

She was born in Sheridan on March 22, 1914, to Adlore and Clara (Shaw) Van Slette. Her mother died in 1917 and in 1923, she and her sister Marjorie went to live at the orphans' home in Twin Bridges, where they stayed until 1926 when they went home to live with their "Papa." She attended elementary school at the famous Robbers' Roost and graduated from Virginia City High School in 1932. Biegie married George "Shorty" Miles in Butte on May 24, 1935.

After ranching in the Ruby Valley, they relocated to Butte in 1947. When Shorty retired from the Anaconda Co., they moved to Woods Bay on Flathead Lake. He died in 1971. In 1973, Biegie married Bill Hand and together they spent their summers on Flathead Lake and winters in Yuma, Ariz. She was an outstanding cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends at her home in Woods Bay. She loved gardening and her yard was always filled with beautiful flowers.

She and Bill moved to Stevensville in 2005. After his death in 2006, Biegie remained in her home until declining health this year necessitated a move to the Bee Hive Homes in Missoula.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by infant sons, Gary and Doug; infant daughter, Lois Ann; sister, Marjorie Anderson; and brother, Emil Sundberg.

She is survived by son, Don (Pepper) Miles of Butte; daughter, Jill (Tom Davis) Miles-Davis of Victor; grandchildren, Heidi Gjefle, Andrew (Stacy) Hunt, Paige (Stuart) Tumey, Heather Hunt, Erin (Stuart) Wagner and Jenna (Pobzeb) Armerding; and great-grandchildren, Erin, Isaac and Anna Gjefle, Scott Turney, Oscar and Gus Hunt, Elli and Asher Armerding and Blaire and Presleigh Wagner. Also surviving are stepsons, Chuck (Lynda) Hand, Bill (Linda) Hand, Bob and David (Penni) Hand; stepdaughters, Helen Molsness, Nancy Hand, Janet (Robert) Garecht and Kathy (Mike) Mercer; and several step-grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be at the Sheridan Cemetery at a later date.

Her family would especially like to thank all the angels at the Bee Hive who were so loving and kind to her.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Missoula, 800 Kensington Ave., Suite 204, Missoula, MT 59801, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Dear Jill and all of Great-Aunt Biegie's family,
My deepest condolences for the loss of such a vibrant woman, and one who was so special to so many. I know Mom, Erma Lee Ellis, always enjoyed staying in touch and then sharing the news with my siblings and I. You will be in our thoughts, Trish
