STEVENSVILLE - Gretta Vannoy Matusick, 95, of Stevensville, passed away Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at Community Medical Center of natural causes.

Gretta was born April 5, 1918, in Garfield County, near Jordan, to Clara (Maben) and Frank Vannoy. She attended grade school and three years of high school in Garfield County and her senior year was at Missoula County High School, graduating in June 1936.

Gretta was married to Walter Matusick in 1943 in Olympia, Wash. She worked various jobs and then she managed the couple's masonry business for more than 30 years.

Gretta was very active and faithful in her church affiliations, teaching Sunday school, being a deaconess and serving on the church boards. She enjoyed all types of artistic endeavors, from painting to quilting, belonging to the Bitterroot Arts Guild, Sunshine Quilters, Bitterroot Quilt Guild and her Promise Stitching group. She was honored as a "Featured Quilter" at the guild's yearly show in 1998.

Gretta grew up on the family homestead in Garfield County, where she rode her horse to the one-room schoolhouse for her early education. The property was sold just prior to her senior year of high school and she moved with her family to western Montana, where they purchased a ranch in the Blackfoot Valley. After graduation from Missoula County High School in June 1936, she worked at various jobs ending up in Olympia, Wash., where she met and married Walter, a solider stationed at Fort Lewis, in 1943. Upon his return from active duty in World War II, they made their home in Missoula. In August 1954, they purchased property just outside of Stevensville, where Gretta resided on that same property until the time of her death.

She was an avid quilter and enjoyed sharing her talents with her friends and family. There was always a project in the works, from crocheting to knitting and sewing. Her flowers brought her much joy and she could often be found just puttering around her gardens. Above all, she was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend, supporting those around her with encouraging words and her great sense of humor.

Gretta was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Matusick; her parents, Frank and Clara Vannoy; and brothers, Rodney and Murray Vannoy. Survivors include a brother, Walter Vannoy of Lewistown; daughters, Eva Kirk and Clare Delaney, both of Stevensville; grandchildren, Chad, Ryan and Craig Mulkey, all of Portland, Ore., Crystal Delaney of Denver, and Dustin Delaney of San Francisco; a great-granddaughter, Nila Komp-Mulkey of Portland.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Whitesitt Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. A reception will follow at Clare Delaney's home in Stevensville. Pallbearers will be Chad, Ryan and Craig Mulkey, Dustin Delaney, Frank Vannoy and Phil Martinsen. Crystal Delaney will be an honorary pallbearer.

The family suggests memorial donations be made in Gretta's name to the Lupus Foundation of America, lupus.org.

I met Gretta at Promise Sitching and was so blessed by knowing her. She was a very giving person and so interested in people and things around her. She created so many pretty quilts and crocheted beautifully! She also shared her knowledge willingly. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

I always enjoyed sitting next to Gretta at our Promise Stitch group meeting. She was very creative with her quilting, and how she could coordinate fabric colors and patterns. She was the best crocheter I have ever known. She had such a sweet and caring personality. With caring thoughts and deepest sympathy for her family.
