Florence, MT Robert Heaney, 89. Robert “Bob” Heaney, 89, of Florence, Montana, a member of “the greatest generation”, passed away at home at 440p, Monday, February 2, 2015. He was born August 22, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY, to George Heaney and Anna (Van Horn) Heaney. He is predeceased by his brothers George and Frank Heaney. Bob was raised in New Jersey and at age 17, obtained his parents’ permission to join the US Coast Guard. He proudly served aboard the USS LST 764 in the Pacific Campaign of WWII at Iwo Jima and other Pacific islands; www.mywarhistory.com/RobertHeaney contains more information about his service. Bob married Elizabeth “Betty” Najim, July 10, 1949, in North Plainfield, NJ and they had three children, Elizabeth, Robert and Timothy. They divorced and he later married Bettye Rhea and they retired to Pearce-Sunsites, Arizona. As a younger man, Bob worked as a home builder with his brothers. He then enjoyed a long career with the Plainfield Board of Education, Plainfield, NJ, as a locksmith, “fixing all the stuff those kids break”. Bob had a passion for the Boy Scouts; he was a Leader to troop 116 in NJ and enjoyed camping and scouting activities over ten years. Even when he wasn’t a troop leader, he was with the troop to help transport them and facilitate scouting activities. Bob loved his family, the outdoors, riding his Harleys, and his dogs. Bob was always there to help family and friends with household projects or whatever else they needed him for. He was happy he had fulfilled his life-long dream of living in his “little cabin in the woods” where he enjoyed his rocking chair on the porch to watch the mountains and the horses, with his dogs in his lap. Bob is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth (William Zader) Heaney, sons, Robert (Karen) Heaney and Timothy (Julia) Heaney; sisters, Florence Williams, Shirley Ehlert; brother, Elwood (Nancy) Heaney; cousins, Mickey (Andrea) Van Horn, Roy (Patricia) Van Horn; grandchildren, Joshua (Desirae) Heaney, Chelcie (Gabriel Young) Heaney, Michael Heaney, great-granddaughter, Brenna Heaney and many loved nieces, nephews and friends. Bob was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to all. The family extends special thanks to Debbie Foster, for her compassionate care and support until the end. The family also extends their appreciation to Jolene Jackson, Ellen Eversole, Carrie Eversole, Vivian Simms, Tom Roe, Partners in Home Care Hospice, Missoula, MT, and Whitesitt Funeral Home, Stevensville, MT, for their kindness, care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Veterans' organization of your choice in Bob’s name.

Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, but love leaves a memory that no one can ever steal. Hold on to those memories.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
