Alfred LaRocque

Missoula  -  Alfred “Fred” LaRocque, 75, of Missoula, Montana, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family.

Born on September 14, 1950, in Belcourt, North Dakota, Fred was the son of Maynard and Violet (Vollmer) LaRocque. He grew up in the close‑knit communities of Wing and Dickinson, North Dakota, where he forged the values of hard work and integrity that would guide his life.

On October 15, 1967—just two weeks before Halloween—Fred met the love of his life, Rosita “Rosie” Hatzenbiler. Their partnership was sealed on September 28, 1968, and shortly thereafter the couple made Missoula, Montana, their home. Fred soon secured a position with the railroad, but his sense of duty called him to another service.

Answering the nation’s call, Fred was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He was wounded in action on March 25, 1971, and spent 13 months recovering at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. For his bravery and dedication, he was awarded two Bronze Service Stars, a Purple Heart, and the National Defense Service Medal. The challenges of combat deepened his resilience, ingenuity, and compassion—qualities that he carried forward for the rest of his days.

Returning to Missoula, Fred and Rosita raised three sons—Troy, Terry, and Wes—instilling in them the same steadfast work ethic, honesty, and loyalty that defined their father. Their home was a haven of warmth and laughter, where friends and family were always welcomed with open doors.

Fred took pride in his appearance, especially his hair, often prompting him to quip, “Don’t touch.” He tended to his garden with the same care he gave to everything he loved. He was an automobile enthusiast, cherishing a 1956 Chevrolet and a 1966 Chevrolet, and he even built a 1976 Chevrolet wagon for hunting trips. The outdoors was his sanctuary; he was happiest hunting with his sons, night‑fishing with loved ones, and sharing stories around a campfire. Known for his quick wit, easy smile, and uncanny ability to fix or fabricate anything from spare parts, Fred’s presence brightened every gathering.

In his final four years, Fred was affectionately known as “Mr. Hollywood” among the residents of the Veterans’ Home in Butte, Montana, where his humor and spirit continued to inspire.

Fred is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Rosita “Rosie” LaRocque; his sons Troy (Coreen) LaRocque of Missoula, Terry (Karen) LaRocque of Orlando, Florida, and Wes (Lisa) LaRocque of Mount Vernon, Washington; nine grandchildren—Austin, Aidan, Makayla, Ava, Alex, Delilah, Jace, Copelin, and Colt; his sister Emma Rudge of Auburn, Washington; brothers Henry and Tom LaRocque of Missoula; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, great‑nephews, and great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maynard and Violet (Vollmer) LaRocque; his sisters Mary Henderson and Joann Hamrick; and his brothers Bud, Tim, and John LaRocque.

A memorial service celebrating Fred’s life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on June 22, 2026, at Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery, 1911 Tower St., Missoula, MT, with a luncheon to follow at the Legion, 829 Ronan Street, Missoula, MT.
