Obituary

Beverly Jean (Shillander) Jones. Bev did not wake up the morning of April 28, 2022, a gentle exit from this earthly plane. Beverly Jean Shillander was born on July 31, 1933 in Rolette, North Dakota to Emma Louise (Getzlaff) and Roy William Shillander. Even though Bev was an only child, she had many cousins who helped develop her mischievous side. Bev was marvelously social, keeping up with old friends and making new ones throughout her life. She met her best friend, Marilyn (Gray) Champoux in 3rd grade, and they remained present in each other’s lives ever after. After graduating from Bottineau High School, she attended Dickenson ND Teachers’ College, and then she and Marilyn wound up in Missoula teaching at Jefferson Grade School. A handsome Deer Lodge guy named Bob happened to be student teaching at Jefferson at the same time. After a whirlwind courtship, she and Bob (Robert W) Jones were married in Bottineau ND, on January 27th, 1957. They lived briefly in Ft Benning GA, and later Ft Ord, while Bob finished his ROTC requirements before moving back to teach in Thompson Falls and then Bottineau ND while they started their family. They then made their way back to Missoula and spent many weekends and summers camping and fishing from Montana to the coast. Eventually the Joneses settled up Miller Creek finding room for horse pastures & a huge garden. After teaching at the Lutheran kindergarten for several years, Bev returned to UM to get her 4-year degree and began teaching kindergarten at Target Range. Many of her students continued to stay in touch- attending a Grizzley game with “Mrs. Jones” inevitably led to a reunion with a fondly remembered student or four. Bev and Bob retired to their cabin on Canyon Ferry Lake outside of Helena in 1990 and Bev immediately joined 3 bridge groups, and held picnics, cookouts, and boat rides. “Grandma & Grampa Camp” for the grandkids became a summer week of paddle boats, swimming, tubing, and boating for several years. After Bob passed away, Bev moved back to Missoula to be near family for a few years before moving into an assisted living home. Bev’s children, Robbin (Jon) Roshi Rose, Michael (Analie) Jones, Todd (Nancy) Jones, and Darin “Chip” (Sharon) Jones, along with our childrens’ families, Catherine “Stello” Roshi-Moles & Emme Lund, Izaya & Elijah Jones, Morgan, John, and Piper Kirk, Kellie, James, Ayla & Ollie Manyhides, remain grateful to those who helped care for our Mother/Grandmother these last few years as she journeyed through Alzheimer’s and Dementia. We plan a family gathering this summer to release Mom and Dad into the lake as they wished. Throughout it all, Mom might have forgotten your name, but she always remembered you were important to her.
