Gary Salisbury Obituary

Florence  -  Gary B. Salisbury, a man whose life was a testament to enduring love, quiet redemption, and the boundless grace of the Lord, passed away peacefully on Oct 16, 2025, at 7:30pm. With family nearby, Gary leaves a legacy of mended fences and healed hearts. While the measure of a man is often taken by his accomplishments, Gary’s true worth was found in the steady hand and gentle patience he extended to every soul he met—whether human or animal.

Gary’s compassion shone brightest in the company of animals. They were his kin, his teachers, and his deepest companions. He was rarely seen without a loyal dog by his heel, and his days were often marked by the rhythmic, steady presence of his beloved horses. To witness Gary with an animal was to understand the purest form of unconditional love. And, watching him work was a lesson in how a real cowboy tends the herd.

When the trail turned upward, Gary was in his element. He carried a deep, abiding love for the back country, and he knew the vast, wild stretches of the Bob Marshall Wilderness better than his own front porch. As a leader and dedicated member of the Backcountry Horsemen group, he ensured those pristine trails stayed open, sharing his passion for fishing and the mountains with every outdoorsperson he led into the stillness of the wild. To Gary, the great outdoors was where the sky met the soul, and that love was as fundamental to him as the breath in his lungs.

Gary’s journey was one of growth. He was a man who understood that life’s greatest strength is found not in avoiding mistakes, but in the courage to acknowledge them. A man of the Lord, Gary dedicated his later years to living a life of grace and humility. He worked tirelessly to mend the fences of past hurts, seeking reconciliation and offering his own heartfelt forgiveness freely. He believed deeply in the power of asking for forgiveness, a profound attribute that defined his devotion and transformed his relationships. He taught us all that redemption is a continuous, living practice, and that every new sunrise offers a chance to begin again.

But perhaps the most profound blessing of Gary’s later years was finding his greatest love, his wife Tana. He referred to her simply and sweetly as “his girl,” and while it is no secret how “she loved him best”, those who witnessed their bond understood that his love for her ran deeper still, a final testament to the powerful, life-changing connection they shared. While their love was young, they packed more adventure, love and memories into their ten years together than most do in 50.

Gary is preceded by his father and mother, Neil and Ruth Salisbury, and his brother, Max Salisbury.

He is survived by his loving family who will forever cherish his example of strength and tenderness, including his devoted wife, Tana, his sons David Salisbury, Jered B. Salisbury and their wives, his “Little Buddy”, Shane “Shaner” Salisbury and his daughter Shannon and her husband. He is also survived by his brother Bernell Salisbury and his wife Marty, and his sister JoAn Cuffe and her husband Mike. His memory will also be treasured by his five cherished grandchildren, and countless others who lovingly considered him grandpa, papa, brother, uncle, and, most of all, unconditional friend.

Gary’s spirit, now unburdened and free, lives on in the quiet wisdom of a trusted horse, the loyal gaze of a dog, and the deep, abiding faith he instilled in those he loved.

Gary’s life was a wonderfully complex narrative. A story about a man who walked the earth with compassion, stumbled with grace and rose with faith. He will be remembered for the courage it takes to heal, the humility it takes to ask, and the immense love he held for all of God’s creatures … most of all, his girl.

A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 11:00 am at Florence Carlton Church. For those who cannot be present, the service will be streamed live on the Church's Facebook page. May he rest in eternal peace.
