Mark Thomas Fuchs
October 12, 1969 – July 24, 2025
Lolo - Mark Thomas Fuchs, 55, passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2025, surrounded by family and friends after a valiant battle with ALS. His positive attitude throughout his illness was a testament to his unwavering willingness to overcome until the very end and he lived with a quiet strength and a spirit that remained bright and loving through it all.
Mark was born in Grangeville, Idaho, on October 12, 1969, the fourth of five children to John and Nadine Fuchs. He grew up in Lolo, where he graduated from Big Sky High School, and later earned degrees in History and Political Science, with a Secondary Education certification, from the University of Montana, followed by a Master’s in Social Work.
Mark was the Program Director at the Sunrise Children’s Home, part of Missoula’s Partnership for Children, for 22 years. His presence in that role—steady, patient, and full of heart—touched the lives of countless children and families. Seemingly unflappable in his work with kids, he was also a great mentor and supporter of staff members, often singing or humming as he walked through the Partnership home. His office walls were adorned with professionally framed children’s artwork. His dedication to assuring all were seen, heard and treated with respect was of utmost importance – striving to provide people with the best tools to move forward in their lives or careers.
“A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was,
the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...
but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.”
—Forest E. Witcraft
Mark was a huge fan of epic fantasy fiction novels and enjoyed a comprehensive and eclectic music collection. His wide-ranging interests and gentle nature made it easy for him to connect with just about anyone. In his younger years, Mark participated in baseball and track. Many years of Little League created a gifted athlete, though he came by his athleticism naturally. He was an outstanding baseball pitcher and shortstop and an exceptional outfielder when he played slow-pitch softball.
Kindness was at the core of who Mark was. He led with it, lived by it, and left it behind in every life he touched. He was a wonderful father to his three children. They have fond memories of hiking, trips to the Oregon coast, attending all their athletic events, teaching them to play softball and soccer, singing Beatles songs in the car, camping and playing board games and video games with him.
Mark is survived by his wife Ivy Irvine and their daughter Lennon, his daughter Alex and son Aaron from a previous marriage, his father John, his sisters Susan Melder (Craig) and Pamela LaFerte (Mark), his brothers Mike Fuchs (Pam Silvers) and Chris Fuchs (Bethany), eight nieces and nephews, and one great-niece. He was preceded in death by his mother Nadine and his grandparents.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 1475 Eaton Street in Missoula, MT, with a luncheon to follow. An informal gathering to remember Mark will take place on Monday, August 4 from 6:00–8:00 p.m. Please contact a family member for location details. Whitesitt Funeral Home & Cremation in Stevensville, MT, is assisting the family.
In honor of Mark’s lifelong dedication to children and community, donations may be made in his memory to the Sunrise Children’s Home at youthhomesmt.org.
“There’s some good in this world… and it’s worth fighting for.”
