FLORENCE - Rosa Elizabeth Marshall, 88, of Florence, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Riverside Nursing Home of natural causes.

She was born June 9, 1923, in Oakland, Calif., to Joseph and Mary Machado. She lived in Livingston, Calif., until 1946. She met and married Jay Marshall in Merced, Calif., when he was serving with the Army during World War II. During her childhood and teen years in Livingston she lived behind the shoe shop that her father owned and repaired shoes at. While attending Livingston High School, she was active in the drama department and on the tumbling team.

On Nov. 27, 1945, her only child, Roseann Marshall White, was born. She remained in California until 1946 when she and Jay moved to Chalis, Idaho, where they operated a cattle ranch with Jay's brother. In 1948, they moved to Florence where they continued to ranch until 1957 when Jay went to work for the Forest Service. Rosa continued to live in Florence until 2006 when her health forced her to move to Missoula with her daughter.

Rosa was very active in the St. Joseph's Altar Society where she was famous for her cakes and pies at the bake sales. She was a member of the Florence Carlton PTA and will be remembered for the numerous plays she participated in and directed. She was a 4-H leader for several years while her daughter was a member. Being a member of GSA since 1980, there was not a football game that she missed no matter what the weather was like. She was the proud grandmother at all the parents' days when her grandson played football for UM.

Rosa bailed Christmas trees for 20 years for Western Montana Evergreen working in both Lolo and Bonner. She helped her husband with his Christmas tree business, which shipped trees to California, Utah and Idaho for more than 20 years.

Rosa was preceded in death by her husband Jay Marshall; her parents Joseph and Mary Machado; her sister Mary Bamber and her brother Frank Machado.

Rosa is survived by her daughter Roseann White of Missoula; grandson Erik Hendrickson (Melissa) of San Jose, Calif.; great-grandsons Joshua and Nicholas Hendrickson of San Jose; niece Charlene McCombs of Modesto, Calif.; nephew Donald Bamber of Turlock, Calif.; God-daughter Arlene (Roy) Nicolet of Missoula and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 28, at St. Mary's Mission Catholic Church in Stevensville. Inurnment will follow in St. Mary's Mission Cemetery followed by a reception.

Uncle Clyde wished to convey his condolences. He is 88 as well. He said that as Jay's friend, he remembers all of the family support your mother gave throughout the years.
