STEVENSVILLE — Merle E. Hambly, 85, of Stevensville passed on peacefully to greener pastures on May 20, 2017. He was born in “Butte America” on October 9, 1931 to Joseph and Valerie Hambly. He graduated High School from Butte and Joined the Air Force in 1954 and served in Korea. Upon his return, he went to work in San Diego for AT&T where he retired in 1976. Knowing he couldn’t sit still, Merle joined the RSVPD (Retired Senior Volunteer Police Department) serving the city of San Diego for 20 more years! Merle was an avid hunter making the annual trip to Montana in pursuit of elk and deer. He was a Founders Club member of the NRA, The North American Fishing Club and The South Bay Rod & Gun Club. He was a past commander and 61 year member of the American Legion, for which he received recognition for being a 60 year dues paying member. Merle and his wife Tilly were recognized by the city of San Diego as the driving force behind the battle to create a beautiful community park built on his block and for stopping a shopping area from being erected at the sight. He was loved and respected by all who had the privilege to know him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tilly and leaves behind a vast amount of close friends that will miss his smile and friendship immensely. A special thank you to the wonderful staff at The Living Centre in Stevensville who were fantastic and attentive to Merle as they are to all the other residents there. A heartfelt thank you to the Hospice care staff; your loving attention is greatly appreciated. A celebration of Merle’s life will be in the near future. Condolences can be shared at whitesittfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local Hospice, American Legion or simply thank a Veteran for their service. Spread your wings Merle! You are free and in Gods loving hands! Cheers…
